How to Price Your Bag Quickly

(Without Guessing)

If you’ve ever tried to list a bag for sale, you know that while taking photos and writing the description is time consuming, often the hardest part is figuring out the price. Too high and it sits. Too low and you kick yourself for leaving money on the table.

Most of us have done the same dance: scroll through old posts in BST groups, search Treet, Poshmark, and Mercari, ask a friend, or lurk in some “what’s it worth?” threads. It’s slow, inconsistent, and honestly stressful.

The truth is, pricing isn’t about one factor like condition. Color is usually the single biggest driver of resale value, and the other elements – Product, Condition, Quality, and Current Market – all play a role too. Once you see that formula in action, setting the right number gets much easier and much faster.

The Old Way: Slow and Stressful

Before I built Leather Ledger, this was my process (and maybe it sounds familiar):

  • Dig through Facebook posts – hoping someone sold the exact same bag in the last few months.
  • Scroll Treet listings – but get frustrated because I could only see what was listed for sale, and not know what the bag may actually sell for.
  • Message a trusted friend or ask in groups – and get five different answers.
  • Second-guess myself – I typically asked myself…

“Is this too high? Will anyone bite?”

What usually happened? I wasted over an hour, still felt unsure, and either priced too low and ended up with a sale making me think I left money on the table or so high that I had to re-list later. The worst is being stuck with a bag that never sells!

Why Pricing Is More Than Just Condition

Some sellers, especially when starting out, put the most weight on condition such as New, Excellent, or Good. That matters, but it is only one piece of the puzzle.

Pricing really comes down to the mix of Product + Color + Condition + Quality + Current Market. Let’s break that down:

Five factors drive resale value every time

Product

Style matters. Some bags consistently hold higher resale value than others even in the same condition.

Color

Rare or in-demand shades often drive the biggest price differences, more than any other factor.

Condition

New, Excellent, or Good condition can change the number dramatically, but it's not the whole story.

Quality

Premium, Almost Perfect, Mystery Box, or C-Grade each set different expectations.

Current Market

Timing matters too. Seasonal demand, store sales, or new drops can all shift resale prices.

The New Way: Pricing with Confidence

Put those factors together, and the numbers can surprise you.

Take these recent sales for the same style bag, a Lola Crossbody Tote with Zipper:

  • Vintage Pink, New, AP — sold for $159 on 9/16/25
  • Vintage Pink, Excellent, AP — sold for $65 on 9/10/25
  • Chestnut, New, Quality not specified — sold for $65 on 9/16/25

And here are two sales of the Tote Backpack sold within a day of each other:

  • Aqua, New, AP — sold for $88 on 9/15/25, after being listed 22 days prior
  • Cosmo, New, Premium — sold for $225 on 9/17/25 after being listed for one day

Same product categories, wildly different outcomes. What drove the differences? Color was the clear difference-maker, with quality and condition influencing the final price.

In the Lola examples, one bag brought $159 while another of the same style sold for only $65. The Tote Backpack shows the same pattern. Aqua in AP sat on the market for weeks and sold for $88, while a Cosmo in Premium moved in a day for $225.

This is why pricing by “condition only” is a recipe for frustration. Two bags both marked “New” can sell for prices more than $100 apart depending on the other factors.

This is where the dashboard changes everything. Instead of piecing together guesses from scattered sales, you can see one of the clearest pictures of the Portland Leather Goods (PLG) resale market available in minutes. Right now the dashboard pulls from Treet sold listings, and my own sales, which gives a strong benchmark even though it’s not the entire resale market. Over time, I intend to expand into more resale sources.

With just a few steps you can:

  • Start with color to see how demand shifts
  • Narrow by condition such as New, Excellent, or Good
  • Add in quality like Almost Perfect, Mystery Box, or C-Grade
  • Adjust the date range to focus on the most relevant sales window
  • Choose the product style from the alphabetical list

Once you have those filters in place, the dashboard does the heavy lifting for you. Imagine you are trying to price a Tote Backpack in Cosmo. You select Color: Cosmo, set Condition: New, and if the bag has a unique quality you choose that, such as AP or C-Grade. The date range will default to the past month, but you can adjust that as you see fit. Finally, you scroll to Backpack in the alphabetical product list. In seconds you see the actual range and average price from real sales.

What used to take an hour of scrolling groups or messaging friends now takes less than three minutes. The uncertainty is gone, and you know you are setting a fair price that will actually move.

And what if your exact unicorn hasn’t sold recently? The dashboard still helps by showing how that same color has performed across other products, which is a solid gauge of demand and price strength.

Price With Confidence

Pricing a bag does not have to be stressful. Once you understand that it is more than just condition, and that color, quality, and timing all play a role, you can stop second-guessing yourself.

“What is this really worth?”

That is why I built Leather Ledger. The dashboard gives you the real numbers behind PLG resale so you can price your bags quickly and with confidence. No more endless scrolling, no more guessing, and no more wondering if you sold too low or listed too high.

If you have ever stared at a bag and wondered, “What is this really worth?”, the answer is waiting for you inside the dashboard.
